Contact jbaker@seacadets.org 517.898.7866 NSCC Training Medical Laboratory Science Rationale: Consistent with Navy and Naval Sea Cadet Mission, this is a Science, Technology, Engeneering and Mathematics (STEM) training. The design provides a challenging and engaging, hands-on training with relevance to several Department of Defense medical billets as well as civilian careers. Specific Relevance: Enlisted Service USAF: Medical Laboratory Apprentice USA: Medical Laboratory Specialist USN: Medical Laboratory Technician Commissioned Service USAF: Medical Technologist USA: Medical Technologist USN: Medical Technologist Commissioned Corps; U.S. Public Health Service Medical Technologist U.S. Government Service Indian Health Service Veterans Administration Centers for Disease Control National Institutes for Health Civilian Service Hospital and Healthcare Pharmaceutical Criminology Research Introduction to other DOD, Governmental and Civilian careers Biomedical Engeneering Infection Prevention Nursing Medicine Disaster preparedness Public Health Logistics: Berthing is provided in dormitories at Central Michigan University, Mt. Pleasant, Mi. This site has been used for NSCC trainings for the past several years including Firefighting, Master at Arms and POLA. A concurrent POLA training is planned for the same week. Transportation is available from regional airports including, Bishop (Flint), . Training Overview: The purpose of this training is to provide cadets with a fast-paced experience with a primary focus on enlisted and commissioned military medical opportunities. Activities are broad-based to ensure engagement and appeal to different interests. Sample activities include: Training on microscopes, instruments and blood banking in a simulated medical ship laboratory. Investigation of microorganisms in the environment cadets will collect cultures from environmental surfaces in the dormitories and buildings on the campus, grow these cultures in the laboratory, photograph results and prepare a slide deck. Cadets will travel via bus too Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo Mi for forensic training. Using principles of incident command, prepare a disaster recovery plan for a hurricane on a costal naval base. Cadets will test their plan during a disaster drill. Work as a team to respond to blood banking needs for a simulated multiple trauma situation aboard a Naval hospital ship. Visit a forensic facility (Law enforcement crime lab and/or medical examiners office) Meet with military medical professionals. Tour medical laboratories. Cadets will also participate in evening activities with the concurrent POLA training including teambuilding, swimming, movie liberty and physical training. Unless otherwise directed the caduceus appurtenance will be awarded.
